Mayor of Clay, Beverly Whaling, has resigned over comments on a racist Facebook post made about Michelle Obama after comparing the US First Lady to an “ape in heels”.
According to CNN, Beverly Whaling had appeared to applaud a Facebook post referring to Michelle Obama as an “ape in heels”. The shamed mayor wrote that the post had made her day, but later said she was referring to the election outcome.
Clay County Development Corp. director Pamela Ramsey Taylor made the post following Republican Donald Trump’s election as president, saying:
“It will be refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady in the White House. I’m tired of seeing a Ape in heels.”
Whaling responded: “Just made my day Pam.”
Clay has a, population of just 491 of which 98% of its 9,000 residents are white.
