Zou Hongyan: Mum Refused To Give Up Disabled Baby With Cerebral Palsy Despite Doctors Saying He Would Have Low Intelligence
Zou Hongyan welcomed her in 1988 only to find out that he wasn’t physically like other babies. Even the doctors in her native Hubei province told her of the problems keeping the baby would bring including misery. The negative things she was told didn’t make her change her mind. The Chinese mum refused to give up disabled baby with Cerebral Palsy despite doctors saying he would have low intelligence.
Things got so bad that Zou had to divorce her husband because of her resolve to keep the baby. She then worked atleast 3 jobs simultaneously as a single mother including protocol training and insurance sales. She also played brain-boosting games with her son to stimulate his senses and build the foundations of his intelligence. Zou Hongyan was so determined that she even taught her son how to use chopsticks even when his hands were so stiff that he couldn’t grip them. She also painstakingly taught him to hold and write with a pen and urged him to study hard.
She told South China Morning Post:
“I didn’t want him to feel ashamed about these physical problems.”
“Because he had inferior abilities in many areas, I was quite strict on him to work hard to catch up where he had difficulties.”
Her son, Ding Ding, is now 29-years-old, is a Peking University graduate with a bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences and engineering. It even gets better. Ding Ding is now a Harvard Law student!
