Urban News: Serena Williams Reveals History Of Braiding Started In Africa
Let’s be honest, it’s been long we last saw Serena or Venus Williams rock those braids and beads. Both sisters had turned heads when they debuted their signature braids. While their competition were rocking ponytails, this sister-sister combo sported beaded braids secured with aluminum foil, a staple hairstyle in their Compton, California community and the larger African American community. Well, it appears Serena has returned back to the basics with a sweet snap in which she’s seen braiding her daughter, Alexis Olympia. She wrote along with the photo:
“Braiding started in Africa with the Himba people of Namibia. We have been braiding our hair for centuries. In many African tribes braided hairstyles were a unique way to identify each tribe. Because of the time it would take people would often take the time to socialize. It began with the elders braiding their children, then the children would watch and learn from them. The tradition of bonding was carried on for generations, and quickly made its way across the world. I am honored to share this bonding experience with my own daughter and add another generation of historic traditions. @olympiaohanian”
