Wole Soyinka has admitted that he is not in support of Donald Trump becoming President of the United States and claims he will tear up his green card if Trump wins.
In a report by The Guardian, Soyinka, who is a scholar-in-residence at New York University’s Institute of American Affairs, disclosed the plan while giving a seminar to students at Oxford University. The Nigerian playwright and poet, was quoted as saying:
“If in the unlikely event he does win, the first thing he’ll do is to say [that] all green-card holders must reapply to come back into the US. Well, I’m not waiting for that.
“The moment they announce his victory, I will cut my green card myself and start packing up.”
Soyinka also criticised Brexit, warning that there is a rise of “ultranationalism” and calling on young people to resist oppression. He also took aim at Bob Dylan when asked about the American songwriter and singer’s unexpected crowning as winner of this year’s Nobel laureate. Soyinka, a little hesitant to respond, said:
“Since I’ve written quite a number of songs for my plays, I would like to be nominated for a Grammy”.
About three weeks ago, 70 Nobel laureates backed Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. On Monday, about 370 economists and eight Nobel laureates denounced Trump, accusing him of promoting conspiracy theories, among other things.
Meanwhile, Clinton has seen her lead in the polls slip after the FBI announced that it was reopening her email probe.
