Celebrity News And Gossip: Idris Elba Opens Up About People Thinking James Bond Can’t Be Black
There has been the debate on whether the role of fictional British Secret Service agent, James Bond, should or not be played by a black man. Idris Elba sat down with Vanity Fair where he discussed everything from his new wife, Sabrina Dhowre, his career and his future ambitions. He touched on playing 007 towards the end of the interview even though it’s not his favourite thing to discuss with people. He opened up saying he would love to play the iconic role but reveals nobody has ever officially offered it to him.
Elba added, “Of course, if someone said to me ‘Do you want to play James Bond?,’ I’d be like, Yeah! That’s fascinating to me. But it’s not something I’ve expressed, like, Yeah, I wanna be the black James Bond.”
On the haters who try to make case why a black man should not officially hit the screen saying, the name’s ‘Bond, James Bond’, Elba got honest by saying, “You just get disheartened, when you get people from a generational point of view going, ‘It can’t be.’ And it really turns out to be the color of my skin. And then if I get it and it didn’t work, or it did work, would it be because of the color of my skin? That’s a difficult position to put myself into when I don’t need to.”
