Current News Headlines: Memphis Man Charged After 4-Year-Old Shot By 3-Year-Old Brother
Memphis police have arrested a man identified as Nathaniel Wilkins, 27, in connection with the death of a 4-year-old child who, police say, was shot and killed by his three-year-old brother. The man has been charged with reckless homicide after police responded to a shooting call in Frayser, where they found the 4-year-old with a gunshot wound to the chest. The child was rushed to the LeBonheur children’s hospital where he was pronounced dead.
According to the police report, Ayden was playing with his younger brother in a room alone when the pair found a gun inside a dresser drawer. The three-year-old was reportedly handling it when it was fired, striking the other child in the chest.
“You have to be more careful,” Memphis mother Ranay Calhoun said. “If y’all have little babies in the house it has to be where they can’t get to it, not even climbing on a chair or nothing.”
Calhoun was at the complex as first responders tried saving Ayden’s life.
“You just saw the police everywhere,” Calhoun recalled.
Nathaniel Wilkins was eventually arrested though several hours after he allegedly admitted to police that the gun was his and that he had left it in the dresser.
He was charged with reckless homicide.
