A Mumbai daycare worker in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, identified as Afsana Shaikh, 30, has been arrested after she was caught on CCTV hitting a 10-month-old baby girl at the creche. Afsana and her employer Priyanka Nikam, 34, both arrested, were booked on charges of voluntarily causing hurt, common intention and sections of the Juvenile Justice Act.
According to Dilip Kale, senior inspector at the Kharghar police station where the FIR was registered, 10-month-old Ritisha had been dropped at the Purva daycare centre at Sector 10 in Kharghar by her mother Ruchita Sinha Monday morning. It’s understood that when the baby’s mother picked her up from work in the evening, she noticed some swelling around Ritisha’s eye. She then asked Afsana what had happened but she dismissed her doubts.
According to reports, Ritisha’s mum noticed a change in the baby’s behaviour. This alongside the bruises on the toddler made her suspect all was not well and that something must have happened at the daycare. She finally approached the Kharghar police to register a complaint. The Kharghar police then registered an FIR against Afsana and Nikam.
“We arrested the two women in the morning. They were produced before the local court, which sent them to jail custody,” Kale said.
Even though Afsana denied having hurt the child, the police managed to get CCTV footage from the six cameras installed at the centre.
“There were shocking images of the kid being beaten up and thrown around by Afsana. During her interrogation earlier, she had maintained that she had not beaten up the kid. By the time we got the CCTV footage, we no longer had her custody,” Kale added.
