As at 11:30 pm 23rd April, there are 981 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria. The NCDC say 197 people have been discharged but 31 deaths have been recorded. Although a lockdown order is in place, people have started going out to look for food because of the hunger which is walking side-by-side now with the dreaded coronavirus. While reacting to the stay-at-home which government has ordered, Ayo Makun popularly known as AY Comedian, stated clearly in an Instagram post that COVID-19 can only be controlled when the rich help the poor by providing enough food.
According to AY, “All we keep hearing daily is “STAY AT HOME”.The rich wants the poor to stay home to avoid the spread of Corvid19, but HUNGER VIRUS won’t allow the poor to stay home.We can only control d spread of d virus when the rich helps the poor by providing enough food to stay at home.”
There were reactions.
One angry follower wrote, “Bros Ay, you’ve said it all.This present Nigerian government led by one useless buhari is the most heartless ever .”
A second tweeted in response to AY, “Stay at home doing what even? Neighbors still gather to play ludo,gist,football,even fuck.Would it not have been perfect to use this period to do a house to house sensitisation on how people should take precautions and also give them parliatives to survive? Nigeria na comedy jur”.
While a third follower brought this reality, “They can extend the lockdown for as long as they want, they can deploy soldiers and police on the street all they want, but one thing is certain, there can never be a total lockdown in this country until the right thing is being done, Nigerians are hungry and paranoid”.
Meanwhile, AY has been outspoken when it comes to those who criticize the efforts of those who take it upon themselves to help the less privileged.
“Those of you who contribute nothing but criticize the efforts of others who provides necessary or little support to cushion the lockdown effects on Nigerians in need, should take matters in your own hands by volunteering to do something or keep your stupid opinions to yourselves,” he tweeted.
